WHY NOT TO WAX
 YOUR NEW WRAP

BY Shopify API |

You may naturally assume that because wax can help protect your paint and provide a nice shiny finish that it would do the same for vinyl, but that's not the case.

PROBLEMS WAX CAN CAUSE

CAST VS. CALENDERED

Waxing a vinyl wrapped car is generally not recommended because wax products contain ingredients that can damage or degrade the vinyl wrap over time.

Adhesive Interaction: Most traditional waxes contain petroleum distillates, which can weaken the adhesive bond between the vinyl wrap and the car's surface. This can lead to peeling, lifting, or premature failure of the vinyl wrap.

Discoloration: Some waxes contain solvents that can cause discoloration or fading of the vinyl wrap's vibrant colors. Over time, this can result in a faded or discolored appearance, affecting the overall look of the vehicle.

Trapped Residue: Wax residue can get trapped along the edges and seams of the vinyl wrap, making it difficult to remove. The trapped residue may also attract dirt and grime, making the wrap harder to maintain and clean.

Irregular Surface: Waxing can create an uneven surface on the vinyl wrap, affecting its smooth finish and potentially creating a patchy or inconsistent appearance.

Difficult Removal: Removing wax from a vinyl wrap can be challenging without causing damage. Harsh chemicals or aggressive methods to remove wax may harm the vinyl wrap or the underlying paint.

SO HOW CAN YOU PROTECT AND CLEAN YOUR WRAP?

CAST VS. CALENDERED

Instead of waxing, it is recommended to use specially formulated products designed for cleaning and maintaining vinyl wraps. For protection consider ceramic coating your vehicle. A ceramic coat provides an extra layer of protection from the elements and can also make it easier to clean the vehicle. For cleaning products look for vinyl wrap specific cleaning solutions that are free from harsh chemicals, solvents, and abrasives. Regularly wash your wrap using a gentle car wash soap and a microfiber cloth or sponge. Additionally, keep the vehicle protected from harsh elements and avoid parking it under direct sunlight for extended periods, as excessive heat can also affect the vinyl wrap's longevity. If you want to enhance the shine of your vinyl wrap, there are specific vinyl wrap safe sealants and detailing sprays available that can provide a protective layer without harming the vinyl material. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning and maintaining your vinyl wrap to ensure it remains in optimal condition.

COMPARING FINISHES

Within these two categories, there are also different finishes available, including glossy, matte, satin, and textured. Glossy vinyl has a shiny, reflective finish that can make colors appear more vibrant. Matte vinyl has a flat finish that can create a subtle, understated look. Satin vinyl has a slightly reflective finish that falls somewhere between glossy and matte. Textured vinyl can mimic the look of materials such as carbon fiber or brushed metal.

Overall, the type of vinyl wrap you choose will depend on your budget, the application, and the desired look and lifespan of the wrap. It's always important to consult with a professional installer to ensure that you are choosing the best material for your needs and that the wrap is properly installed for maximum longevity and visual impact.
