HOW LONG WILL MY
VINYL WRAP LAST?
BY Harry Kim |
Vinyl wraps are a popular alternative to traditional vehicle painting. They are a type of film that can be applied to a vehicle's surface to change its color or appearance. There are several types of vinyl wraps available, including matte, glossy, metallic, chrome, and carbon fiber. Vinyl wrap is less expensive than traditional painting and can be removed easily without damaging the original paint if it was applied correctly and is removed within the recommended time frame. The process of applying vinyl wrap is called "wrapping." It involves thoroughly cleaning the surface of the vehicle, heating the vinyl to make it more pliable, and using special tools to smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles. A well-installed vinyl wrap can last between 3-7 years, depending on the quality of the material used and how well it is maintained. Vinyl wrap can actually increase the resale value of a vehicle if it is well-maintained and appeals to potential buyers. It is important to take care of vinyl wrap by washing it regularly using a gentle soap and a soft cloth or sponge and avoiding parking in direct sunlight for extended periods of time to prevent fading.
When it comes to choosing a vinyl wrap, it's important to consider factors such as quality, durability, and color options. High-quality vinyl wraps are typically made from cast vinyl, which is more pliable and conformable than calendered vinyl. This makes it easier to apply and less likely to crack or peel over time. The cost of a vinyl wrap can vary depending on factors such as the size of the vehicle, the type of vinyl used, and the complexity of the design. On average, a full wrap for a standard-sized vehicle can cost between $2,500 to $5,000.Overall, vinyl wraps offer a cost-effective and customizable way to change the appearance of a vehicle or promote a brand. With proper installation and maintenance, they can provide a long-lasting and durable solution that can protect the original paint and increase the value of the vehicle.

HOW LONG DOES VINYL WRAP LAST?
CAST VS. CALENDERED
This is a common question we hear from our customers. Simply put, the better you care for your vinyl wrap and vehicle, the longer it will last!
Please note vinyl wrap is not like car paint and is not meant to be left on your vehicle for an extended period (3-5 years). Based on the condition of your wrap it can become harder to remove after an extended period, leaving the wrap cracking, fading and among other issues. Colors like chrome are going to have the shortest lifespan because the film is more sensitive and susceptible to wear and tear. Please see below for estimated lifespans. Properly cared for vinyl can exceed these expected lifespans.

CLIMATE CONDITIONS
Expect more life from your vinyl wrap if you live in a climate zone with a cooler climate, less sun exposure, your car is garage kept, protected from pollutants and over exposure to UV rays (harsh sun exposure).
Expected lifespans for cooler climates:
Expected life for regular gloss and matte colors - Up to 3 years + with proper care
Expected life for pearlescent, color shifting colors, pastel colors - Up to 2 years + with proper care
Expected life for brighter, more fluorescent colors, and chrome finish - Up to 1 year + with proper care
Living in a climate zone with more exposure to continuous UV Rays (harsh sun exposure), a daily driver, and non-garage kept cars, are expected to have a shorter lifespan with vinyl wrap.
Expected lifespans for warmer climates:
Expected life for regular gloss and matte colors - Up to 2 years + with proper care
Expected life for pearlescent, color shifting colors, pastel colors - Up to 1 year + with proper care
Expected life for brighter, more fluorescent colors, and chrome finish - Up to 1 year + with proper care

OTHER EXTERNAL FACTORS
While these expected lifespans can give a general estimate of how long your vinyl can last, it is important to note that there are plenty of other factors that can shorten a wrap's longevity. If your vinyl is not carefully maintained you can end up with burn marks or permanent stains from various pollutants, bird droppings, bugs, and more. It is essential to keep your vinyl clean and protected from the elements if you wish to keep it in good condition. COMPARING FINISHES
Within these two categories, there are also different finishes available, including glossy, matte, satin, and textured. Glossy vinyl has a shiny, reflective finish that can make colors appear more vibrant. Matte vinyl has a flat finish that can create a subtle, understated look. Satin vinyl has a slightly reflective finish that falls somewhere between glossy and matte. Textured vinyl can mimic the look of materials such as carbon fiber or brushed metal.
Overall, the type of vinyl wrap you choose will depend on your budget, the application, and the desired look and lifespan of the wrap. It's always important to consult with a professional installer to ensure that you are choosing the best material for your needs and that the wrap is properly installed for maximum longevity and visual impact.
